3 Ways to Prevent Heart Disease in Your Kids

1. Reduce your child’s salt intake.

Children under the age of one year should take no more than a gram of salt a day, while those older than 11 years should not exceed six grams of salt per day.

2. Discourage junk food.

Children develop food habits at an early age, so use the opportunity to teach them that junk food is no good for their hearts. Fried foods, candy, and chips contain lots of calories that may lead to an unhealthy weight, and that’s a risk factor when it comes to heart disease.

Additionally, such food is usually high in sugars and salts. Encourage intake of fruits, vegetables, and foods rich in omega-3 instead.

3. Encourage an active lifestyle.

There’s a good reason your own parents asked you to go out and play, and you should do the same to your kids. That’s because exercise helps keep your child’s heart pumping, and that’s a good way to keep cardiovascular disease at bay.

Unfortunately, children these days prefer a sedentary lifestyle, opting to spend most of their time indoors on their phones or playing video games. Look for ways to get them out more.
