While all of us are familiar with tooth brushing, many people still get it wrong. A common mistake is using a toothbrush with a big head or those with stiff or firm bristles. The sad part is, with improper brushing techniques, you may unknowingly hurt your teeth or gums and do more harm than good.

You need to brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time. Unfortunately, most of us fall short on the recommended time, increasing the likelihood of leaving behind plaque and bacteria. Meridian dental clinics note that the only way to make sure that you’re brushing for two minutes is to use a timer or an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer.
Overdoing brushing or being aggressive
While brushing is essential for removing plaque and bacteria, you don’t have to do it several times daily. Two to three times a day is enough. Brushing your teeth a couple times a day can wear down your tooth enamel and damage your gums. The same is also true for brushing aggressively or using too much force. Note that you can still clean your mouth effectively with gentle and short strokes.
Brushing immediately after eating
You may not realize it, but brushing right after meals can actually harm your teeth. This is because during meals, the acid level in your mouth increases, bringing your teeth or your enamel at their weakest state. It’s best to wait at least 30 minutes before brushing to give your saliva enough time to restore the enamel. You can rinse your mouth with water first as you wait.
Protect your teeth and gums when brushing by avoiding these mistakes. Don’t forget to replace your toothbrush every three or four months or sooner if bristled start to look tired or worn out. You should also see your dentist at least every six months for regular checkups and cleanings.
