One of the excavator components that constantly receives a lot of use and strain is the undercarriage. It is where the forces from all the years that the machine digs, loads, and tracks, is concentrated on, after all.
Unfortunately, many owners and operators wait for this to happen before they start looking for a reliable supplier of high-quality excavator tracks. If this happens to your machine, you’d have to replace it immediately, although you shouldn’t even allow it to get to this point.
Preventing problems in the future
For future reference, and to help you prevent this from occurring, keep an eye out for sprockets that skip over the lugs. When the track loosens or the sprocket wears out, it results in the two easily skipping and sloppily meshing against each other. Derailing may also happen, which can endanger not just the operator, but people near the machine, too.
Another red flag to watch out for: cracks on the tracks. Like everything else that bears heavy loads, your excavator’s tracks will begin to develop cracks as time passes by. However, this can happen a lot faster when you use the machine on tough and rough terrain, scrape against curbs and walls, or improperly operate the equipment. Direct heat and sunlight can also shorten the life span of the tracks.
Maintenance for longer lasting performance and lifespan
After you’ve invested in new tracks, you should practice proper maintenance procedures not just to get the most use out of them, but also to keep people safe and secure from dangers.
In addition to using only the right type of tracks, make sure that you operate them only on the terrain the manufacturers built them for. Don’t use rubber track treads on jagged surfaces, or steel tracks on muddy terrain, for instance.
