Spotting the Spammy: Dealing with Bad Links

In the past, search engine optimization is fairly straightforward – the more links you have pointing to your website, the higher your ranking would be. Today, however, with the onus more on being able to provide a more personalized service, such algorithm would not make the cut. This why you now need to be careful with your incoming links.

According to Link Cleaners, companies who do not know how to deal with search engine penalties due to spammy links should take the necessary steps to solve the issue immediately. In most cases, they can spot spammy links with the help of the following pointers:

  1. Get a Google Webmaster Tool.

This is a free tool that can be quite useful in monitoring the health of your website. One of its many uses is checking the kind of links you are pointing to and those that are pointing back to yours.

  1. Verify your website.

As soon as you have set up your account, list down your website and verify it. Verification of your website can be done in a variety of ways, the most popular of which is by adding a meta tag. You can also verify by uploading a specific HTML file to your server or with the use of the Google Analytics code.

  1. Download list of links.

Once you have verified your site, you can head to the Search Tools and then click on the tab containing the links to your site. You would then be able to get a downloadable file containing the links. This file can be opened in Excel, so you would not have a problem filtering the links.

  1. Clean the list.

Filter the list and remove any duplicate entries. Once done, check out the links that remain and remove links that are:

  • Coming from sites that have a PageRank of 0 or “N/A”
  • Coming from sites not related to your business niche
  • Those coming from directory sites
  • Sponsored Links
  • Links included in spun articles

Now, once you have figured out which links are hurting your site, reach out to the site owner and have them remove the link. If this is not possible, you can then make use of the bad backlink removal tool known as the Link Disavow Tool.
